Tennis legend Serena Williams is on the road to recovery following a recent health scare that required the removal of a large cyst from her neck. In a candid TikTok video and a post on X, Williams, 43, shared her experience of discovering and eventually undergoing surgery to remove the cyst, which had grown to the size of a grapefruit.
The Discovery of the Cyst
Williams revealed that she first noticed a lump on the side of her neck back in May. Initially, doctors informed her that the cyst, later diagnosed as a branchial cleft cyst, did not need to be removed unless she wanted to. However, the cyst continued to grow, prompting Williams to seek additional medical tests.
“They said I don’t need to get it removed if I don’t want,” Williams explained. “So I did not get it [removed], but it kept growing.”
After undergoing three tests and a biopsy, all of which returned negative results, Williams was advised by doctors to have the cyst removed as soon as possible. The cyst, described as benign, posed a risk of infection or leakage if left untreated due to its size.
Understanding Branchial Cleft Cysts
A branchial cleft cyst is a benign sac filled with fluid, typically found in the neck area. According to the National Institutes of Health, these cysts tend to grow slowly over time, sometimes taking weeks or even years to reach a noticeable size. While not inherently dangerous, large cysts can cause complications if left untreated, such as infections or pressure on surrounding tissues.
In Williams’ case, the cyst had grown to the size of a small grapefruit, leading to the decision to proceed with surgery. Despite the health scare, Williams expressed her gratitude for the outcome of the procedure and her improving condition.
Recovery and Gratitude
Following the successful surgery, Williams shared clips from the hospital and provided updates on her recovery process. While still healing, she made good on a promise to her daughter, Olympia, by accompanying her to the American Girl Doll store shortly after the procedure—despite feeling unwell during the trip.
In her video, Williams expressed how fortunate she felt that the surgery had gone well and that she was on the path to recovery. “I am feeling so grateful, and fortunate everything worked out, and most of all I’m healthy,” she wrote.
The tennis icon’s openness about her experience has resonated with fans, many of whom have praised her resilience and transparency. As she continues to heal, Williams remains positive and focused on her health, grateful for the support she’s received throughout her recovery journey.

As one of the greatest athletes of all time, Serena Williams has faced many challenges throughout her career, both on and off the court. Her latest health scare is yet another hurdle she has overcome with grace and strength. Williams’ recovery is progressing, and she continues to inspire millions with her resilience and dedication to her health and family.
